Jon Brunberg
Biography

 

Jon Brunberg is a visual artist that was born 1964 in Tyresö and lives and works in Stockholm. He has an MFA from Konstfack University College for Art, Craft and Design and a post graduate degree from the video department at the Royal College of Fine Arts in Stockholm. He often works with long-term and interdisciplinary projects that revolves around themes related to philosophy, society and politics, such as power, utopia or conflict, which are presented in videos, animations, internet sites, events or performances.

One such project is The Polynational War Memorial, which is an architectonic proposal for a global war memorial for all wars since 1945 that is presented in 3D animations and full-scale experiments. Other projects are the internet-based work Power as Metaphysics and Measurable Unit, which includes an attempt to measure individual power, and the Utopian World Championship, which is global competition in utopian writing, made in collaboration with the artist Annika Drougge. Jon Brunberg has also, in recent years produced, a series of animations that relates to historical events, such as 101 years, 19 years and 124 years, which all display a large number of events at high speed, on a political map.

Recent exhibitions includes the solo show 19 years + one tool for measuring power in the Studio at Moderna Museet, Loss/Förlust at Wanås in Knislinge, Changing Matters at Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet in Stockholm, A Memorial and a City at Clarion Hotel in Stockholm and [C]artography at Crawford Art Gallery in Cork. He has been awarded several grants, and been an artist-in-residence in Helsinki, Belfast and Dublin. He is also an independent writer, curator and teacher.

Jon Brunberg has worked for ten years as an artist and has exhibited frequently in Sweden and abroad. He is currently working on a trilogy in which he takes on complex issues such as utopia, conflict and power.

One part of this trilogy is The Polynational War Memorial, which is an interdisciplinary art project that will result in an architectonic proposal for a global memorial for all wars since 1945. Another work in this series is the internet-based work Power as Metaphysics and Measurable Unit. Jon Brunberg has also produced more intimate works, for example the interactive video installation Disjunction (and nowhere to turn to), which has been shown in Stockholm, Berlin and San Francisco, and a series of video- and audio works, such as 101 Years and 19 Years, which both use a political map to display certain events at a high speed.

Jon Brunberg was a member of the artist group and experimental art space SOC.Stockholm between 1999 and 2005, and intitiated during that time the internet-aided art project The Utopian World Championship together with Annika Drougge. He has a MFA from Konstfack University College for Art, Craft and Design in Stockholm. Beside of his artistic practise he is an independent writer, web-developer and teacher.
