About Documentalities
Where is the middle of the Middle East?
The point of departure for the art-works on this site is a number of places and their relation to documents, history, journalism and storytelling. This site is an archive of works in progress. It will change over time, develop and grow.
A journey was made. From Stockholm to Damascus. From Damascus through Amman to Ramallah. From Ramallah to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron. Through the landscape. Across the river. Over the hills. By the villages.
Documents steer our lives and our world. With the right kind of document you have legal rights, you can work, live and travel.
As a consequence, with the wrong type – or without documents – you are not allowed to do any of these things. You cannot work. You cannot claim justice, access water, land or own property. You cannot move.
Identity is defined by documents. Defined by the power.
Those with power over the document rule you, own you.
Let us pretend there are no borders. Let us assume there are no East, no West, and no documents. Only places. And a million stories to be told. Beyond the presumptions of truth projected on to us by politics and mass media.
The middle of the Middle East then lies wherever we want it to be.
